Project status

The program is well underway and is on track to be implemented in November 2024. Bringing MyWay+ to life represents a change in the way Canberrans use public transport. We will continue to give updates as the project progresses.

MyWay+ demonstration buses

The first of four MyWay+ demonstration buses have begun servicing the Canberra bus network. They are progressively learning our public transport network while generating community awareness of the upcoming transition to MyWay+.

Passengers can hop on and off a demonstration bus and enjoy a FREE ride* when one arrives at their stop. The buses are branded with MyWay+ imagery and passengers do not need to tap on or off during this period.

*Regular fares apply to connecting services.

Changes to the combined ACT Seniors card/TC MyWay card

When the new MyWay+ ticketing system goes live in November you will no longer be able to use the current combined ACT Seniors/TC MyWay card to tap on and off public transport. However, you should continue to use your current ACT Seniors card to access other benefits, including discounts arranged through the Council of the Ageing (COTA). The only difference is that the side of the card with TC MyWay will become redundant.

The new MyWay+ system will allow you to travel on buses and light rail similar to how you do now but with more options for how you pay, including a range of simple ticketing options like tapping on with a bank card or smartphone via the MyWay+ app or digital wallet you can choose what works for you, or by using a travel card as you do today.

If you would like to continue to use a physical travel card, MyWay+ cards will be available from a greater number of retail agents, including the major supermarket brands. Concession can be applied at the time of purchase or alternatively be added through a MyWay+ account. Further details and instructions will be announced as the system ‘go live’ date gets closer.

ACT Seniors card holders will still be entitled to the same concession travel discounts. This includes free travel for over 70s, and free off-peak travel for those aged between 60 and 70 working less than 20 hours per week.

Support and assistance

In the coming months, Transport Canberra will provide in-person support for seniors at community events and at COTA ACT to help with the transition to MyWay+.

Details about these community events will be published on the Transport Canberra social media and weekly e-news.

Ticket and payment options for concession holders

Transport Canberra’s new ticketing system uses account-based ticketing, this allows you to apply your concession and pay for transport with different payment methods.

Through the MyWay+ account you will be able to link various payment options, whichever is most convenient for you. This includes:

  • a debit/credit card
  • smart device, such as your smart watch
  • digital ticket purchased through the new MyWay+ app
  • new physical MyWay+ card.

You will just need to ensure you tap off with the same payment method you tapped on with.

When setting up a MyWay+ account you will be asked to select your concession type. Closer to the launch date, Transport Canberra will provide instructions on how to set up a MyWay+ account and ongoing support will be available to help you through this process.

Whether you choose to use a digital or a physical MyWay+ card, all concession holders must carry their proof of concession while traveling on public transport.

Frequently asked questions

Why do we need to change to a new system?

The current MyWay and NXTBUS systems have been in place since 2010 and 2014 respectively, are now outdated and won’t enable new technology improvements such as secure contactless payment technology.

Throughout this installation phase, which is expected to be during October to November, no fares will be collected from passengers.
