All Transport Canberra fares include a free 90-minute transfer period so you can connect to different bus or light rail services using the same ticket for free within 90 minutes of first validation.

Free travel is available for some passengers such as children 5 and under (not attending school) and some concessions.

Frequently asked questions

MyWay+ account and app

Do I need to create a MyWay+ account to travel or use the app?

No, you can travel anonymously without an account. However, creating an account offers benefits like personalised settings, increased ways to pay, transaction history and journey notifications.

Why does each MyWay+ account holder require their own email address when registering their account?

Each MyWay+ user needs a unique email address to secure their account through multi-factor authentication. Multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security by requiring multiple pieces of information to access your account.

When you sign up or log in to MyWay+ you’ll enter your username and password as usual.

If additional verification is needed to keep your account secure, a verification code will be sent to your registered email address. You must then enter this code to access your account.

Having a unique email address ensures that only you receive this verification code, protecting your account from unauthorised access.

Important note: When setting up a MyWay+ account for a student, the account must be in the student’s name not their parent or carer. The eligible concession must also be in the student’s name. Each MyWay+ student account will need their own unique email address.

Primary account holders (e.g. parent or carer) will also be able to link multiple accounts in order to manage secondary accounts. This functionality will be available in the coming months.

How do I pay for multiple passengers?

Each person needs to tap on and tap off with their own contactless payment method (Mastercard or Visa), in-app MyWay+ pass or MyWay+ travel card (purchased at a MyWay+ retail outlet).

Alternatively, you will be able to purchase paper tickets (individual or group) at ticket vending machines found at light rail stops or bus interchanges.

Note: The new ticket vending machines will be installed soon. The location of ticket vending machines will remain the same. Visit ticketing vending machines for the latest information.

Do I need to use the same payment method when tapping on or off bus or light rail services?

Yes. When using public transport, you need to tap on at a MyWay+ validator when you start your trip and tap off at a MyWay+ validator at the end of the trip to pay the right fare. MyWay+ validators are on all buses and at light rail stops.

If you transfer onto additional bus or light rail services, you need to tap on and off each time.

Can I use MyWay+ contactless payment if I have a joint bank account?

Yes, you can use any contactless Visa, Mastercard or device linked to a joint bank account.

Note: MyWay+ only accepts Mastercard and Visa.

In my MyWay+ account, the transfer status of my MyWay balance is showing as pending. What do I do?

If your transfer status is showing as pending, please call 13 17 10 for further assistance.

Is the MyWay+ app available for Apple and Android?

Yes, the MyWay+ app is available from the Apple App Store and Google Play. The app will let you plan your journey across different modes of transport, check accessibility options and receive personalised messages for your favourite bus services.

Does the MyWay+ system support express mode for Apple users?

Currently express mode is not yet available for Apple users. However, we are actively working on enhancements as part of our ongoing improvements to the MyWay+ system. Express mode is planned for a future update. Stay tuned for more details.

Why do I need to enable pop ups for the MyWay+ app and account?

It is important to enable pop ups in your system settings on your phone or web browser, as the MyWay+ app and MyWay+ account require a new pop up window to securely link your credit or debit card to your account and complete the account set up process.

What is the $1 pending fee? How does it work? Why is it necessary?

If you use your bank card or digital bank card to tap on and off public transport, a $1 pending fee may appear in your account. This is a temporary authorisation hold used by some banks to validate your payment information. Depending on your bank, it may appear as a pending transaction on your bank statement for up to 7 business days.

If you travelled on a Fare free Friday, once verified, the $1 charge will be removed and won't be processed as an actual payment. For the rest of the days, the actual fare for your trip will be reflected on your bank statement depending on the processing time of your bank.

Please note that some banks may combine multiple trip fares from a few days into a single transaction, which will appear as one transaction on your bank account. If a transaction appears in your account on a Friday, it will be for a previous trip, rather than a fare incurred on Fare free Friday.

The $1 pending fee is necessary for the following reasons:

  • Card validation – the $1 hold confirms your card is legitimate and valid.
  • Fraud prevention – the $1 hold ensures you're the rightful cardholder.
  • Preliminary authorisation – the $1 hold checks if there are sufficient funds or credit available.
